Location: The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory located in the Western Caribbean, 480 miles south of Miami, Florida, 150 miles south of Cuba and 180 miles northwest of Jamaica. From the U.S. the Cayman Islands is one of the closest Caribbean destinations to reach. Flying time from Miami is about 70 minutes.
Language: English.
Time Zone: Cayman remains on Eastern Standard Time year round. There is no Daylight Savings Time, so it is one hour behind the East Coast from April through October.
Weather: February is the coolest month, ranging from a low of 60 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 86. Summer temperatures can reach 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity ranges between 68 to 92 percent. Hurricane season is June to November. Average rainfall is 60 inches, mostly in the rainy season – May through October.
Currency: The Cayman Islands has its own currency. The fixed exchange rate is CI$1.00 for US$1.25. The dollar is widely accepted around The Cayman Islands at a rate of CI$0.80. Most merchants will give CI change for U.S. payment, so suggest clients carry small bills.
Entry: U.S. and Canadian citizens need only proof of citizenship. A valid passport or a notarized birth certificate plus a matching photo ID, along with a return airline ticket, will suffice. Entry is granted for up to 30 days at the discretion of the Immigration Department. Voter registration cards are no longer accepted.
Car Rental: Cayman has one of the Caribbean's most extensive modern fleet of rental cars, and many feature right-hand drive. A variety of models are available in Grand Cayman and a limited number on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman (jeeps and four-wheel-drive only). Driving is on the left-hand side of the road and seat belts are required. Visitors must obtain a temporary drivers' license from the police station or car rental agency. They only need a valid driver's license from their home state to get one. The fee is $7.50. Drivers must be 21 to rent a car in the Cayman Islands, and some rental agencies' insurance will not cover renters under 25.
Taxis: The average taxi fare between Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman and hotels along Seven Mile Beach ranges from $12 to $16 per person. Taxis are readily available from all resorts on Grand Cayman.
Bus Service: The bus terminal is next to the Public Library on Edward Street in downtown George Town serves as the dispatch point for buses to all districts. There are 38 mini-buses operated by 24 licensed operators, serving eight routes.
